The kitchen is the heart of the home when it comes to making meals and hosting family gatherings. However, throughout the year, bugs and other pests will undoubtedly look for shelter and your home is a great option, given the food in your kitchen.
If you start to regularly spot unwelcome pests in your kitchen, don’t wait until they multiply and the problem worsens. At Advent Pest Solutions, our team has experience dealing with these uninvited guests and can help you take the steps to prevent them from showing up in the first place! Read on to learn a few tips for keeping your kitchen pest-free.
Clean Your Dishes Immediately
Food that’s been left out anywhere in your home can attract all kinds of bugs. This doesn’t only apply to fresh food but food left on your dishes after a meal. It may not look as appetizing to you anymore, but bugs would be glad to eat it as a midnight snack!
Be sure to rinse your dishes as soon as possible after use, and run them through your dishwasher or hand wash them instead of leaving them out to tempt pests. Doing a quick wipe-down of your countertops after doing the dishes can also help ensure there are no crumbs left out to attract pests.
Store Food Where It’s Cold
If food is perishable or can be stored in the fridge or freezer, do it. Rodents can chew through plastic, paper and cardboard, but they have a much harder time getting to your groceries if they’re stored in the fridge.
Take Out The Trash
No one likes taking out the trash, so it can be tempting to let it overflow at times until someone gives in and takes it out. A full trash can is basically a giant all-you-can-eat-buffet for bugs and other pests and if it’s too full that the lid can’t fit, you’re essentially inviting the flies into your trash.
Depending on the type of waste in your trash, you may need to take it out daily or as soon as it’s full to keep pests away.
Clean And Maintain Your Home Regularly
Cleaning your home can do so much more than just making it look clean and tidy. Regularly sweeping and vacuuming can help clear up any crumbs on your floors which can attract pests.
Maintaining your home is also important. Rotting wood and leaky pipes can attract pests, and sinks should be cleaned regularly so that it doesn’t serve as a breeding ground for flies.
Also, don’t forget your yard! Wood and debris piles around your yard should be cleared out. Also mowing your grass and trimming bushes will help shoo bugs away as it offers them less space to hide in or make a home.
